The great Elvenking Thranduil of the Greenwood (otherwise known as Mirkwood) rules from his vast woodland halls. This revered Elf has a deep connection to the forest, the stars, and white gemstones. The name Thranduil means "Vigorous spring" in Sindarin, from tharan "vigorous" and tuil "spring". Though the name is said to be of Silvan origin, Tolkien's notes on tharan state it was used only in Sindarin.
