The history of the Mearas, the revered breed which made the kingdom of Rohan home of the Horse-lords? The famed Shadowfax, as Legolas Greenleaf recognized, was the prime example of this breed during his time. He is considered one of the greatest of his kind.

In T.A. 2501 Léod of the Éothéod captured and tried to tame the first of these proud and free-spirited creatures, only to be killed when he tried to mount it. His son, Eorl, however managed to ride the colt and named it Felaróf. Eorl came with this horse south to Rohan and the Mearas were his descendants.
